What is "Sexting"?

What is "Sexting"?

What is "Sexting"?

Taking and sharing photos and videos is easy, but controlling what happens to them afterwards is difficult.

Sexting refers to creating and sharing intimate texts, nude or semi-nude photos, and/or videos between people using mobile phones, tablets, or computers.

Why Do Young People Engage in Sexting, and When Does It Become Dangerous?
In the digital age, especially during the teenage years and beyond, sexting has become a common phenomenon. Today’s teens are constantly connected online. Their lives are highly public—they share photos and videos on Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, TikTok, and more, do live streams from events like parties or concerts, and send messages rather than calling friends. Sharing photos is easy, but controlling what happens to them is hard.

Sometimes, teens struggle to make wise choices about what to post, share, or send. Many teens may not realize that sexting can have serious consequences. Unfortunately, one impulsive decision can impact their lives for years.

It’s essential to understand the main dangers of sexting!

Major Risks of Sexting Can Lead to Pornography – The nude or semi-nude photo or video you shared could end up, accidentally or intentionally, in the hands of someone with bad intentions, leading to serious problems. This can make you a target of bullying, cyberbullying, “sextortion,” or grooming.

Sexting as a Form of Bullying – Once your “sext” (message, photo, or video) enters cyberspace, you lose control over it. It can be shared, copied, or used without your consent. Your photo or video could be used to bully you, humiliate you, or damage your reputation.

Attracts Abusers’ Attention – After sending a photo, it’s impossible to control who sees it. Many teens discover that their personal photo has been widely shared online. Once a photo is on the internet, even sexual predators might see it, putting you at risk of exploitation.

Risk of Blackmail – Sometimes, impulsively sent intimate photos can later lead to blackmail. There are cases where the recipient has threatened to embarrass the sender. Many teens who receive such threats comply with the blackmailer’s demands, often feeling ashamed and hesitant to seek help, leaving them vulnerable to prolonged abuse.

Sexts Never Disappear – Some teens believe that photos sent by text, email, or even Snapchat will only be seen by the recipient. However, once sent, these images are out of your control. They can be shared, copied, and reposted at any time.

Affects Your Reputation – No matter how serious the relationship may seem, sending sexual messages (text, photos, videos) is rarely a good idea. These images can potentially damage or even destroy your reputation. For example, the recipient might brag and show the image to others or, after a breakup, decide to share it publicly, leading to embarrassment and humiliation.

Understanding these risks is essential to make informed decisions about your digital privacy and safety.
